What Is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an integrative psychotherapy approach that has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma. EMDR is a set of standardized protocols that incorporates elements from many different treatment approaches (EMDRIA, 2018).

What can EMDR Treat?
Emdr has been scientifically researched as an effective modality for treating PTSD. EMDR also treats the following:

⮊ Panic Attacks, Complicated Grief
⮊ Dissociative Disorders, Disturbing Memories
⮊ Phobias, Pain Disorders, Performance Anxiety

⮊ Stress Reduction, Addictions
⮊ Sexual and/or Physical Abuse,
⮊ Body Dysmorphic Disorders, Personality Disorders

What is a typical EMDR session like?

Usually sessions are in phases of 8. The first session will be intake and the second will include preparation. After these stages are complete, processing of targeted memories begins. EMDR targeting can be most described by a train stopping at different stations and while old memories are processed other memories may come up that need to be processed. The processing uses bi-lateral stimulation of the eyes or using buzzers for the hands.
